Funeral Types

A funeral is a personal way to say farewell to your loved one in a way that reflects their life and their values. For many families a funeral service will take place in a church or crematorium; in most cases, close to where the deceased has lived. However, people’s expectations of a funeral are changing and there are no rules against holding a funeral service in a less traditional venue such as a community hall, at home, at a sports facility or indeed, outdoors. Each funeral we provide is unique and can have elements of both the traditional and the alternative. We work with you to create a ceremony that is right for your loved one.

Burial:  Burial is a traditional means of caring for the physical remains of a loved one. Burials are typically held in a churchyard, cemetery, or perhaps a woodland burial site. One of the principal reasons for choosing a burial is that it provides mourners with a physical location where they can visit and grieve.

Cremation:  A cremation may precede or follow a service held in a church or other venue separate from the crematorium, or in the crematorium chapel itself.  The service can be unique to reflect the life of the individual or contain all the elements of a traditional funeral.  You may prefer to choose a simple cremation with only the Funeral Director in attendance.  If you wish, the cremated ashes of your loved one are returned to you at a later date for interment or scattering.

Religious Funerals:  A traditional funeral service is a religious service taken by either a Church of Scotland minister, a Catholic father or any other religious denomination, followed by a burial or a cremation.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony:  This type of funeral is a non-religious ceremony for either a burial or cremation service.  The ceremony is led by a Celebrant or Humanist and focuses on the life of the individual.  There are no hymns or scripture readings instead the ceremony may include listening to a favourite piece of music, poems or readings are chosen to reflect the person’s life; family and friends have an opportunity to be part of the ceremony and share stories and memories of their loved one.

Eco/Natural/Green Funerals:  The aim of a natural burial is to return the body to the earth in the most efficient natural process, to leave the least impact on our planet.  This can range from planning a whole natural funeral or considering certain aspects of a natural funeral to incorporate into a traditional funeral such as the choice of coffin; wicker, bamboo or cardboard for example or having a natural burial in an unmarked burial plot.    Natural burials are intended as an environmentally sustainable alternative to existing funeral practices such as cremation which is very carbon intensive.

Funeral Vehicles

Our modern funeral fleet consists of a Mercedes E Class Duffy built hearse, a Dorchester MK11 limousine (to carry 7 passengers) and a Volvo XX Estate car (to carry 4 passengers).  Our vehicles are fully valeted on site and are prepared to the highest standard with great care and attention before every funeral.  Our vehicles are driven by experienced funeral chauffeurs who will take care of you and ensure you arrive at the funeral service on time and in comfort.

Your loved one’s final journey can be an emotional and poignant part of the service and is an important aspect of the funeral arrangements.  We know how meaningful the final journey can be.  If you would like the funeral cortège to take a particular route or drive past a significant landmark we can plan for this when you discuss the funeral arrangements with us.

Every funeral is unique and personal and we appreciate you might like something different for your loved one to be conveyed to their final resting place.  We can arrange a horse-drawn hearse or motorbike hearse for example and will work with you to provide the most fitting and perfect send-off.

Coffins & Urns

We supply our bespoke ‘Cruachan’ coffin as standard in a choice of light or golden oak finish, suitably furnished for burial or cremation.  Our high-quality coffin features pressed panels with a raised lid and is offered with a choice of cord colour for burial services.

You have the option to choose any style or colour of coffin you wish.  We will help you to choose your preferred style and order the coffin from the appropriate supplier for you.

We can supply environmentally friendly coffins, to order, made from alternative material to wood which can include wicker, bamboo and cardboard in a wide range of colours.  Please feel free to discuss your requirements with us.

We have an in-house engraving suite and engrave all our coffin and ashes casket nameplates.  We also engrave personalised lair markers to place at a grave until a memorial headstone can be inscribed or erected.

Considerations for your ceremony

Chapel of Rest

Grieving is a natural process that can take place after any kind of loss.  When a loved one passes away grief can be a very over-powering emotion.

To help overcome this you and your family are invited to spend time with your loved one in the privacy of our family room, to see your loved one at peace, to be close to them, to share your final moments and thoughts with them.  This quiet, reflective time for a personal farewell can offer great comfort to you, it may help you to gather your thoughts and be at ease with the coffin, creating space to help you cope with the difficult and emotional day of the funeral day itself.

Where appropriate, viewing of your loved one is by appointment giving you all the time you need to say your farewells.  You are welcome to bring in photographs, letters, cards, flowers or keepsakes to be placed with your loved one.  The family room is furnished simply but comfortably, with candles and soft lighting, we offer tea and coffee and Ian and Shiralene will be on hand to offer support to you and your family, should you need it.

Funeral Stationary

We offer an in-house design and print service for orders of service and other funeral stationery.  The inclusion of family photographs, memories of special times, poems or verses make an order of service unique and personal to your loved one.

Shiralene will work with you to personalise the stationery with your chosen pictures and words to include details of the service, hymns and key elements of the service but also to create a beautiful and treasured memento to keep or send to family and friends unable to be there on the day.

Music and Media

Most funeral services include music, whether its traditional church organ music or a selection of favourite tunes from a playlist.  This can help reflect the character of the deceased as a reminder of their personality, tastes and interests.  Listening to a loved one’s favourite piece of music can be uplifting to you at the funeral, evoke memories of happier times or a special event in their life.

The sound of bagpipes is familiar and comforting to many of us living in Oban and we can arrange for a bagpiper to attend your loved one’s funeral service to pipe them from the church or crematorium or play a chosen lament as they’re laid to rest.  (Photo of Jamie)

We work with local digital media companies to arrange and provide live streaming or webcasting of a funeral allowing those family and friends, unable to attend in person, to pay their respects and share in the service online.  We can arrange for filming in locations including local churches, village halls, crematoria or at outdoor services.

Tribute Pages

As part of our service to you, in partnership with MuchLoved, we can create an online tribute page for your loved one.  The page displays a funeral notice, details about the funeral service and collects in-memory donations for your chosen charity, including any Gift Aid.

This special memorial webpage is an everlasting tribute, a place where you can share memories and stories with family and friends, upload a copy of a eulogy and order of service, light virtual candles, add music and photos, as well as leave messages of condolence and support. www.muchloved.com

Floral Tributes

Floral tributes are an important part of a funeral.  From traditional coffin sprays, wreaths or lettering to tributes reflecting a favourite hobby or sport to floral sculptures and contemporary arrangements featuring vegetables – the options for floral tributes are endless.

We work closely with trusted independent local florists, Lynette at Petals of Oban https://www.petalsofoban.co.uk/ and Justine at The Thistle and The Rose https://www.thethistleandtherose.co.uk/ who will support you in choosing your style of tribute and help you to choose the flowers and colours to be used to ensure your chosen arrangement is a beautiful, unique and fitting tribute for your loved one.

Flowers can be sent to our funeral home on the day of the funeral to travel with your loved one on their final journey.

Charitable Dontations

In lieu of floral tributes, you could offer family and friends the option to remember your loved one by making a donation to a named charity of your choice.  This could be a local or national charity that supported your loved one or was a charity close to their heart.  Retiral collection boxes will be available at the end of the funeral service and if you choose to have a tribute page created, family and friends would also be able to make a donation on-line in memory of your loved one.

Funeral Reception

The funeral reception is a social gathering held after the funeral service, a chance to relax and an opportunity for family and friends to offer support to each other, share memories and stories of their loved one and enjoy some light refreshments.

We can arrange catering at various venues including hotels, pubs, community halls and other venues.  Most venues will offer catering with a range of options, to suit dietary requirements, based on a per-person charge.

We liaise with various local hotels, restaurants and venues in providing funeral teas for our families all of which provide good food, friendly service and accessibility for people of all abilities.

Ian, I want to thank you very sincerely for the wonderful service you gave to our family on the occasion of our mother’s funeral. You guided myself and my sister so gently but efficiently through the arrangements and on the day, you and your team were wonderful.

Completely Professional, but with a kind and personal care – it was Ian, like being in the hands of a very dear and trusted old friend
